James Scholar Guidelines
GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN FINE AND
APPLIED ARTS
James Scholars are required to complete one honors section or course during each
academic semester to remain certified in the program. The most common way to meet this requirement in FAA is for students to complete an Honors Contract Learning Agreement (HCLA) with an individual professor for a course in which they are already
enrolled. Completion of such an agreement makes any class eligible for honors credit for that individual student.
When a student requests honors credit for a class, here are some general guidelines.
- Student completes a course
related activity of an extraordinary nature, in addition to regular
coursework - Form or product of the
learning agreement is subject to professional standards of the discipline
and to the approval of the instructor - General rule of thumb is
that the honors credit work should represent an additional 15 hours of
work for the student - Appropriate examples for
honors credit include: research papers (8 to 10 pages), special lab
experiments, preparation of films or photographic essays, independent
research on teaching methods, others at discretion of instructor
To receive honors credit the student must:
1)Meet with the instructor to agree on a project and complete the HCLA form
(The University HCLA form is available in the College Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office).
2) Return the signed form to the College Office at 110 Arch by the 4 th week of class.
3) Complete the terms of the contract and receive a B or better in the class itself.
For honors credit to be awarded the instructor must:
After students submit the HCLA to the College Office the instructor will see **Registered Honors** next to the student's name under the Registration Status column in both the
class roster and the grade submission forms. (If this designation is absent the instructor should contact the FAA Undergraduate College Office, 333-6061, faa-uaa@uiuc.edu.). If the student completed the contract and has received a B or better in the
class, the instructor should select an honors grade from the drop down
menu on the final grade roster. Honors grades have an 'H' after the
grade.
NOTES:
1) In general, beginning level studio and practical
courses for non-majors are not appropriate for honors agreements.
2) Students registered in the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in
the College of Fine
and Applied Arts who are seeking honors credit for a course in Music must have
their honors contract learning agreement approved both by the instructor and by
Dr. Edward Rath, Associate Director, School of Music. Music
Building Office.
