FAA Student Handbook: Special Programs
Study AbroadIf a student is considering taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by participation in a study abroad program, the first step is to visit the Study Abroad Office, 115 International Studies Building, 910 South Fifth Street. Information is available on a wide array of programs and countries in which to study. Staff counselors will assist in defining student's academic interests and narrowing the choices of possible study abroad locations. There are many overseas universities that take part in study abroad programs with the University of Illinois. Advisors in the student's curriculum and fellow students who have taken part in a program would be valuable resources for pursuing a program. The student submits a detailed proposal of plans for such study, indicating how this program will benefit their UIUC degree or what requirements they hope to satisfy. Although it is not necessary to list the exact courses they will be taking overseas, a general listing of courses in the area in which study will be done should be provided. The student is registered in FAA 299, which maintains registration with the University, and permits the student to register for the semester in which he or she will return. At the conclusion of the experience, an official transcript will be forwarded from the foreign institution to the Study Abroad Office for evaluation. The transcript is then referred to the College office for official acceptance and determination of credit. Course work that is to be used to satisfy degree requirements that are designated by name or area by the department must be taken for credit and grades. The address is of the Study Abroad Office is shown below. For more information regarding study abroad programs students should either go to their respective colleges or check the study abroad office homepage for more information. 115 International Studies Building Internship Programs and Academic CreditThe college does not award credit for internship programs, whether paid or performed on a volunteer basis. It may be possible to set up an independent study with a U of I faculty member that incorporates internship work, which is most easily arranged when a student has already established a relationship with a professor. The special project and amount of credit are worked out between the two parties. |
