FAA Student Handbook: College & Curriculum Changes

Preliminary Consideration

In essence, a change in curriculum is a change in the choice of careers. As such, it is a major decision which should not be treated lightly. It is hoped, therefore, that students will read the following very carefully and make final decisions only after much thoughtful consideration.

Many students will have doubts at some point about whether or not they have chosen the right profession. This is only natural. If these doubts recur persistently, academic difficulties are occurring, or a new field is being strongly considered, professional advice and guidance is appropriate.

Recommended Counseling Procedures

  1. Consult with the Associate Dean, 110 Architecture Building. You may have developed a rapport with an instructor or an adviser who could explore new areas with you.
  2. The Student Counseling Center, 206 Turner Student Services Building, 333-3704, can assist you through its vocational testing and guidance services.
  3. Assuming you have decided you are in the wrong curriculum, the next step is to discuss this with your parents or those persons upon whom you depend for financial support.
  4. Before reaching a final decision in choosing a specific new curriculum, be sure to consult an advisor or some expert who is a specialist in the new field you are considering. They may be a practitioner, artist, performer, or even an advanced undergraduate or graduate student.

Instituting a College or Curriculum Change

Each college has a quota which determines the maximum number of students that can be enrolled in a specific curriculum during any given semester. Admission procedures for college transfers are similar to those use in accepting new students into the University.

  1. Beginning freshmen must remain in the college of admission for one year. Transfer students must remain in the college of admission for one semester. For both types of students, this also means they must follow the curriculum to which they were admitted.
  2. A change in college or curriculum can be made only:
    • Ten working days before and during the Early Registration period
    • Five days prior to, through five days after the beginning of classes each semester.
  3. If space restrictions allow, an Associate Dean can approve a change in curriculum within the college only for a student who meets the admission and scholastic requirements of the new curriculum for which application is being made. Some curricula require completion of certain courses prior to being considered, some require auditions or submission of portfolio, and others have very competitive grade point averages. Contact the department or the college office for requirements.
  4. In a change of curriculum within the college, an authorization must be obtained by the student from the undergraduate admissions officer of the department of the new curriculum. The change in curriculum becomes effective for the semester in which the student is registering.
  5. In a change of colleges (ICT or intercollegiate transfer), the student seeks admission to the new college by discussing their intentions with an admissions officer in the new college. This will frequently be an Associate Dean at the new college. If admissible, the officer in the new college will change the student's curriculum on-line.

Leaving FAA

At times, either a student requests to leave the College of Fine and Applied Arts and pursue another program, or the College Office for Undergraduate Academic Affairs finds that a student has not been following an FAA curriculum.

If the College Office finds that a student has not been taking the classes required to progress toward a degree in FAA for a number of semesters, we will drop the student from the college and notify the student that they are being dropped because they are not making progress toward a degree.

If a student has been taking the FAA required courses up to the time that they request a transition semester, we will allow one transition semester.

Transition Semester

When a student wishes to leave FAA and properly notifies the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the college will allow the student one transition semester. The student does not need to take the FAA core courses during the transition semester.

The student must visit the FAA Office for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and fill out a written petition so that we can set up the student for this one semester.

This office will place a college advising hold on the student’s registration. We will then send the student a letter confirming that they are now entering a transition semester.

In order to be admitted into another UIUC College, a student must visit that college’s advising office and apply for admission. FAA does not transfer students to another College. The admission into another UIUC College is the sole responsibility of the student. We encourage the student to request a written letter or form verifying the conditions of acceptance.

We wish the departing student the best in their academic endeavors. The college advising hold will prevent the student from enrolling or continuing in FAA the next semester.

The student must visit and notify this college office with a written petition in order to be granted the one transition semester. If a student does not follow the course sequence required for a degree in this college, they will be dropped from this college.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts admits students who at that time intend to pursue one of our programs. A student will not be granted a transition semester upon their acceptance into the College.
