Registration Procedures
Students who plan to continue at the Urbana-Champaign campus during the next semester should register shortly after mid-semester of the preceding semester in order to secure the places reserved for them. This procedure helps to ensure students of appropriate class schedules by encouraging them to receive academic advising and by making the selection of courses for the next semester. (Detailed information concerning procedures and an Invitation to Register is mailed to students before the registration period begins each semester) It is the responsibility of the student to make normal progress toward the degree. Departmental advisors and the A & A Deans will assist the students to achieve this.
Specific college and university requirements for all students:
-
A student must meet minimum scholastic requirements of the University and the curriculum in which he or she is registered.
-
A student should expect to complete the degree within the total number of semesters normally allotted to that curriculum. Many of the curricula in FAA are highly structured, i.e.., the sequencing of the courses is critical in maintaining progress towards the degree. Delay in taking a course at the appropriate time may cause severe consequences in scheduling later on and may unnecessarily extend a student's college career.
Although specific curricular requirements are the general rule, exceptions are considered when a student demonstrates his or her need for personal variation within the given curriculum. Request for exemptions or course substitutions must be made in writing, supported by the advisor and approved by the A &A Deans of the College prior to registration.

Special Registration Limitations

School of Music - Applied Music Courses
Students registered in the School of Music must follow the procedures listed below for registering in applied music courses:
A School of Music entrance audition qualifies a student to enroll in 100-level applied lessons within his or her major studio. Students in Music Education, Theory/Composition, and Music History remain at the 100-level for their entire length of study. Students in Vocal or Instrumental Performance must change to 400-level studio after the completion of 4 semesters (16 hours for instrumental, 12 hours for vocal) of applied study. Successful completion of a Sophomore jury is required before entering the 400-level studio.
Students must enroll for applied study in the same letter section each semester. Change of sections must be approved by the studio and the School of Music Undergraduate Office.
Students in any music curriculum who wish to take private lessons on a secondary instrument/voice must audition for placement. Non-music students must obtain departmental approval prior to registration in the following courses: Music 106, 406, 506, 178-198, 478-498, 580-598.
