Off-campus Worksite Policy

College employees are expected to perform their normal work duties on campus. However, the College recognizes the need to remain flexible and accommodate both the employee and the organizational requirements of the College. Only those employees with a legitimate business or health-related need will be allowed to enter into an off-campus working arrangement, most typically academic professionals and academic hourly employees. For purposes of this policy, off-site work will be defined as two or more scheduled and approved days a week (standard 5-day work week) where work is performed outside of campus offices.

Each unit may establish telecommuting or off-campus positions that the unit believes to be necessary. Such positions will require the unit executive officer's and College advance approval for both short- and long-term arrangements. In requesting approval, the following information should be explained:

1) Why the employee is working off-site rather than on campus
2) What type of work the employee will be performing while off-site
3) Estimated length of time that the employee will be working off-site
4) Approximate number of days per week the employee will be off site.

The College will review and determine the appropriateness of each request, except that approval and notice are not required for the following:

1. Employees specifically hired for remote site employment 2. Employees whose job requires temporary assignment to a remote site in order to complete the goals and objectives of the position (e.g., approved business trips)

Employees who are asked to take advantage of the off-campus worksite policy will also be required to sign an agreement, which outlines the details and obligations of the program. Each employee selected to participate is expected to adhere to the criteria set forth in the agreement without exception.

With limited exceptions, administrative and clerical personnel are not permitted to telecommute and should not perform work outside of the office on an on-going basis. However, occasional work off-site is expected in the normal course of business and is often more productive for certain kinds of tasks and is allowable. As with other absences from the office, unit executive officers should leave contact information in the unit.

Faculty often do their research and creative work off-campus. This policy is not intended to restrain that practice. However, faculty are expected to attend meetings on campus as necessary to remain engaged members of their units. On-going classroom instruction should take place in University facilities for the safety and security of our students. Regular teaching off-campus of classes officially scheduled for on-campus instruction raises questions of liability for the University and the faculty member.

The College will continually review and make recommendations based on the effectiveness of this policy.
