Visiting Appointments

Quality of faculty is a concern for all of us,
not only in securing tenure track and tenured faculty, but also the visiting
faculty. Before hiring full-time visiting faculty, unit executive officers
should:

  1. Review with the Dean the need for, and the number of, visiting
appointments in the context of the over all planning process for the unit.
  2. Communicate with faculty about the reasons for these positions.
  3. Establish means of review and consultation about selecting visitors (especially
over the summer when the usual methods of consultation are unavailable).
  4. Develop methods for the orientation of visiting faculty, their mentoring,
    and evaluation.

Letters of offer for yearlong, full time visitors are to be sent
from the Dean's office.

From Provost's Communication #3:

Visiting Prefix

"Visiting" may be used in the title of an academic
appointment when the individual to be appointed is to be a temporary appointee
of one year or less. Such appointments may be renewed for a period generally
not longer than three years. Appointments beyond three years imply permanent
status and should be converted to permanent appointments in accordance with
established procedures. Visiting appointments may require the performance of
services to the University and may therefore be salaried, but this need not
always be the case.

Adjunct Prefix

The use of "adjunct" as a prefix to a faculty rank
indicates that the position is not the individual's primary position.
"Adjunct" may be used in the title of a faculty appointment when the
individual to be appointed is expected to have some sort of long-term,
peripheral association with the University or when the individual holds a non-faculty,
salaried appointment as a primary position with the University. The modifier
"adjunct" is not used with academic professional titles.

The individual to be appointed should be recognized in his or her
field. Departments and units should exercise appropriate review procedures
before making an adjunct appointment.

Departmental or Institute Affiliate

The position of
"affiliate" is to be used only for people who otherwise have a
faculty position on the campus; this distinguishes it from the term "adjunct".
Use of the "affiliate" title does not preclude the use of the
traditional joint appointment. Conversion of an existing joint appointment is
allowed only upon the written agreement of the staff member and department(s)
involved.
